Three Ways a Concrete Patio Makes Your Yard Better

A patio is not just a slab. It is the room your backyard has been missing. Here is what a well-built concrete patio actually does for a home in the Town of Babylon.

  1. More Usable Space, Instantly. Most Long Island backyards are between 3,000 and 6,000 square feet, and a lot of that is grass that never gets used for anything. Three Things to Do So Your Patio Lasts 30 Years

The good news concrete is low-maintenance. The bad news low is not zero. Do these three things and your patio will look great for decades. Skip them and it will look tired in five years.

Sweep or blow off the patio at least once a month. Leaves and dirt sitting on the surface can stain the concrete, especially if you have integral color or a stamped finish. Once or twice a year, power wash the whole thing with a 3,000 PSI washer on a wide fan tip. Do not use bleach or acid those etch the surface. A mix of warm water and dish soap handles most stains. For rust or oil, use a concrete-specific cleaner from Home Depot or a local hardware store.

Reseal your concrete patio every three to five years. We recommend penetrating siloxane sealers they soak into the concrete instead of sitting on top, so they dont peel or turn cloudy. Stamped concrete patios need a decorative topical sealer more often every two or three years because that sealer also carries the wet-look sheen. Best time to seal on Long Island late April through May, or late September through mid-October, when it is dry and 50-80F.

Do not park a car on a patio slab that was not built for vehicle loads. Patio slabs are usually 4 inches thick great for people and furniture, not great for a 4,000-lb sedan. Also, keep rock salt sodium chloride off your patio in winter. It eats concrete. Use sand for traction, or a calcium magnesium acetate CMA or magnesium chloride de-icer, which are much gentler.
